You may have heard of a welding table before and how useful it is to have one. A welding table is a waist-level platform that works like a workbench. You use it when you use welding for metal fabrication. A welding table is very useful because it provides a stable place for the welder to work and can also help in squaring and measuring. If you want a short answer on whether or not to ground your welding table, it's a yes - welding tables should always be grounded to prevent voltage leakage from the output leads.



Whenever high voltage is used, grounding will stop the current from creating an arc and finding it. If your table is not grounded, while you are unlikely to be electrocuted, you may receive a nasty electric shock you won't soon forget.



While it is technically possible to weld without grounding your welding table, the risk of electric shock and damage to nearby electronics is not worth the risk - not to mention the fact that the quality of the weld will be poor due to insufficient current transfer.

Most manufactured soldering stations include a grounding clip - usually as part of their soldering circuitry. However, if you are building your own soldering station, it is best to properly install the clamp to ground the station.



A grounded weld can be attached in two places - to the metal welding table itself or to the workpiece being welded. Attaching the welding clamp flush to the bottom of the table will prevent it from getting in the way during the welding process.

Attaching the grounding clamp to an unobstructed area of the table will effectively ground the weld, but it also makes the table itself part of the circuit, leaving the welder vulnerable to shocks when touching the table. To avoid this, the grounding clamp can be attached to the workpiece itself.



If there is no convenient place on the workpiece to attach the grounding clamp, attach the vise welding clamp to the workpiece first and then attach the grounding clamp to the vise.
